Welcome to the first screening of Afrofilm & Diasporic Realities!
Afrofilm is a self-organised monthly screening of films telling the lives and experiences of african and afro-descendant people from various geographical locations.
We will be showing films for us by us, which means that the screening is for a closed audience of African and Afro-descendent people.
There is a lot to know and learn from all of us and we think that films are a relevant and efficient way of making this possible.
Join us for the screening of Preta by Poliana Baumgarten and My Jewish Family by Yagi Taffere to then end the evening with a discussion round to share and create knowledge about Black realities we weren’t yet familiar with and to connect with each other.

Zwischen 1550 und 1888 wurden während des Kolonialismus mehr als 3 Millionen Sklaven nach Brasilien gebracht. Heute leben in Brasilien mit 55 bis 57 Millionen Menschen die meisten Nachfahren von Afrikaner*innen außerhalb Afrikas. Das postkoloniale Laster liegt bis heute vor allem auf den Schultern Schwarzer Frauen*des Landes. Durch Colourism und die rassistischen, wie auch patriarchalischen Gesellschaftsstrukturen, werden stetig stereotypische Bilder auf sie projiziert, die es ihnen erschweren an der Gesellschaft teilzunehmen oder sie nachhaltig zu verändern. Schwarze Frauen* sind von der Wirtschaftskrise und dem Anstieg der sozialen Ungleichheit im Land am stärksten betroffen. PRETA ist eine Collage Schwarzer Frauen*. Von Haushaltshilfen über Köchinnen oder Anwältinnen sprechen sieben Schwarze Frauen* über ihre Lebensrealitäten und den Intersektionen von Diskriminierung in Brasilien.
My Jewish Family by Yagi Taffere:
Yagi Taffere’s “My Jewish Family” is about a Black Jewish family whose older members once immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia. Several members of the family talk about their realities, their dreams, those of their parents and what it means to live as a Black Jewish person in Israel.
The film is in English with English subtitles.
